The Alpine Butterfly is perfect for creating a loop in a line and is often used in rappelling to clip in a climber along a rope for fall protection. To tie the Alpine Butterfly, begin by creating a loop in the line. Next, add a twist to create a larger top loop.
Fold this top loop down, grab what is now the bottom of the larger loop and pass it through the backside of the original smaller loop. Continue to pull the top of the passed-through loop while holding the standing parts and tighten. Once completed, you’ll be left with a useful fixed loop in the middle of the line.
