Seventeen Years Ago Today, America Stood Back Up
It was on this day seventeen years ago that the United States experienced devastating attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. This daylight terrorist attack on our homeland left us stunned as a nation. However, through the chaos and confusion, we slowly gathered ourselves and prepared to face the world.
That day, in countries all around the world, people gathered to support our nation and mourn our fallen. They sang songs, held vigils and prayed for us. They played our national anthem and hung our flag. Despite what our attackers wanted, we did not hide or cower. President George W. Bush appeared to address the nation and began his remarks with the following statement.
“Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward and freedom will be defended.”
All around the United States, flags were flown and memorials were created and we made a promise as a nation to never forget this day. Seventeen years later, there’s no doubt that our country is divided. However, despite those divisions and disagreements, it’s on this day that we can stand together, transcend politics and remember the fallen of the September 11th attacks.
Never Forget.
